The Two Moors Long O's are back again for 2008 and have been modified to make the navigation similar to the level you will need for the OMM.
This year controls will be on larger features unlike the more usual O navigation,. where you could finde yourself looking for a small flag in a pit among a sea of pits!(yes that was me lost at the Welsh  6 Day Event)

]South west area must do events---Dartmoor Long [/b][/u]O:7km  17km  24km orienteering event 4th Oct
                                                    Exmoor Long O:7km 17km 24km orienteering event 5th Oct
Navigation, Rout chioce,Hills,Rough ground,Bogs,Mud,Low vis(probably) Competition,SI Punching(on Dartmoor Run),Run Solo or as a team ,You can even run with your pack ,camp near the pub then drive to the Exmoor event on the sunday and do it all again!!
This is the closest we get to the OMM in the SW and the timing is perfect for your last serious run.

A couple of us are doing the Rab mountain Marathon in the Lakes on the 29th September.  There are only two classes of score course; elite (7 and 6hrs) and mortals (6 and 5hrs).  If your like me and keep getting lost  Embarrassed on the OMM, it will be excellent nav training.  They will accept teams of 1,2,3 or 4.

it might be a bit late now, but dark and white events run the Hope Moors and tors event, which is a great course over testing terrain, and entry fee is only £8!!

8 weeks before this year's OMM is a little late to be asking about suitable events, you could have already missed some corkers by then!

Looking to beyond the 07 OMM, it's worth putting a calendar of events together for across the spring and summer of next year if you want to be 'match fit' in 08 without having to ramp up too much at the end.

The What training do people really do? thread has various stuff on this subject. I myself have written various ramblings on it. Have a read through that and you will find a great variety of fun stuff.

I think that if you enjoy the OMM, it's worth doing a few similar things throughout the year: that way, you do more of what you like and the training will almost take care of itself.

Bristol Orienteering Klub is organising a long orienteering event in the Forest of Dean on Sunday 27 September 2009.  It would be useful navigation and distance training, although the terrain is wooded rather than open.  More details can be seen and entries made through http://www.fabian4.co.uk/default.aspx?EventID=239.  Deadline for pre-entry is 15 September.
